Without the use of free space on offer, key groups supported by the Community Catalysts’ ‘Do Your Thing’ project would have struggled to host its much-needed activities for the community.
The ‘Do Your Thing’ project supports people with a learning disability and/or autism to think about what they do with their time and take a lead in starting their own activity or interest groups.
Huddersfield-based restaurant, Med One, offered Community Catalysts a helping hand as it opened its doors to the community – offering its upstairs room for free to those needing space.
And Mark Finch, Project Co-ordinator admits that the health and well-being activities on offer to all ages may have struggled to take place if it were not for the Lebanese restaurant’s generosity.
“Having the Med One space available for people to deliver an activity from as part of the ‘Do Your Thing’ project has been great,” said Mark.
“We have been able to link into the community with far greater ease and at no cost thanks to Comoodle. It has opened doors that were otherwise closed to our groups.
“Resources are tight and we need to help ourselves to help each other. There must be so many rooms in towns that aren’t being used and that’s a waste.”
Med One restaurant is one of a number of businesses across Kirklees who have signed up to the online platform and shared its ‘space’ for the community to use.
Med One’s room is set aside as an office in the evenings for the Jane Khalaf Fund, a campaign to help raise awareness of the problem of drink spiking which pushes for more to be done to tackle it.
Baron Hiskello, from the Fund, said: “Our anti-spiking activities mainly take place in the evening so during the day this room sits empty.
“It just makes sense to let groups borrow the room for worthwhile causes. It barely costs the business anything but it promotes the Jane Khalaf Fund and also lets people know about the restaurant. Quite a few people have said they had never been here before but now they are thinking about coming for a meal.”
